As we look to the future, ETH Zürich is discussing with potential organisations to take over leading this extraordinary and pioneering project and continue its mission of driving innovation and empowering people with disabilities through technology.
While CYBATHLON's journey at ETH Zürich ends here, the story is far from over. The next edition of the event may take place in Asia in 2028, marking an exciting new chapter for this unique global competition.

CYBATHLON History: A Journey of Innovation and Inclusion
Explore the remarkable journey of CYBATHLON, a groundbreaking ETH Zürich initiative that has transformed the world of assistive technology and inclusion for people with disabilities for over a decade.
2013: The Beginning
CYBATHLON was initiated by Professor Robert Riener at ETH Zürich to provide a platform that challenges teams from all over the world to develop assistive technologies suitable for everyday use with and for people with disabilities, with a vision to drive innovation in assistive technologies and promote greater inclusion for people with disabilities.
2016: The Inaugural Event: The First Edition
The first ever CYBATHLON 2016 took place at the SWISS Arena in Kloten, Switzerland. A total of 66 teams from around the world competed in six disciplines, inspiring the world with their groundbreaking technology and resilience.
2020: A Virtual Evolution: Global Edition
During the global pandemic, CYBATHLON 2020 adapted to a virtual format with local hubs around the world. With 51 teams from 20 countries, pilots and teams competed remotely, demonstrating their creativity and adaptability in six disciplines.
2024: Greater, Bigger: The Third Edition
CYBATHLON 2024 brought 67 teams from 24 nations to the SWISS Arena in Kloten, Switzerland, and to 7 connected hubs in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Hungary, Thailand, and South Korea (2), to compete in 8 disciplines. With the largest CYBATHLON ever, the event celebrated the peak of cutting-edge technology, teamwork, resilience, and human determination.
CYBATHLON to Live On
As the CYBATHLON project comes to an end at ETH Zürich, its legacy as a global platform for innovation and inclusion continues. The next edition of CYBATHLON could take place in Asia in 2028, opening a new chapter for this extraordinary competition.
